I'm happy to announce that we have rolled out several new features in BitNami Cloud Hosting over the past couple of weeks. First, we added support for Alfresco and JasperServer, the first Java-based applications to be supported in BitNami Cloud Hosting. We also made several improvements to the GUI and updated the base AMIs and several of the applications available in the BitNami library. Please see below for details.
Support for Java-Based Applications
BitNami Cloud Hosting now includes support for Java-based applications, as well as those based on PHP or Ruby on Rails. The first two Java applications to be added to the BitNami Cloud Hosting library were Alfresco and JasperServer. Alfresco is an open source Enterprise Content Management (ECM) system featuring Document Management, Web Content Management, Collaboration Management, Records Management and Image Management. JasperServer is a high-performance business intelligence platform and report server designed for developers and businesses. It enables end users to create their own ad hoc queries, reports, charts, crosstabs, and dashboards. To give these applications a try, simply select them from the BitNami Cloud Hosting library after clicking on the 'create new server' button on the dashboard. Of course, like all BitNami Cloud Hosting servers, you can simply delete them when you're done.
You Can Now Run Alfresco and JasperServer on BitNami Cloud Hosting
User Interface Improvements
We have made several improvements to the user interface for BitNami Cloud Hosting. First, we added a validation step to check that a new server that is being created has adequate disk space, based on the applications that are being added to the server. We improved the refresh rate for the details provided when a server is processing, improved the presentation of IP and DNS details and added links to how-tos when entering a new cloud account in the system, such as how to set up an Amazon account and how to get your credentials. We have also been building out the BitNami Cloud Hosting wiki to provide a better resource for finding information and answers to common questions.
BitNami Now Checks to Make Sure You Have Enough Space on Newly Created Servers Based on the Application(s) Selected.
Image and Application Updates
The base Ubuntu AMI provided in BitNami Cloud Hosting has been updated to the latest version of the Canonical Ubuntu 10.04 AMI. Several applications in the BitNami Cloud Hosting Library, such as SugarCRM, phpBB and Wordpress have also been updated.
As a participant in our private beta, we're looking to you for feedback on these new features, as well as on BitNami Cloud Hosting in general. Love it? Hate it? Please let us know! Your feedback is extremely important in shaping the BitNami Cloud Hosting product as we move towards our commercial release, which is planned for next month.
